Maori in New Zealand celebrate Matariki

Whanau gathering-this is a time when the extended
whanau get together to celebrate the New Year of
Maori.

Preparing Matariki breakfast-wake up early in the
morning and look at the stars, while breakfast  we
talk about the good times with the people that have
passed and make the food they love or enjoy. If you
see the stars it is believed as good fortune

Harvesting props-to grow new crops, and get the ripe
crops off.

Fly kite-Maori make special kites instead of paper or
plastic we use thin wood or Harakeke.

Fishing- It is a time to fish and slow cook it while
enjoying your time with your whanau and while you eat
you sit under the matariki stars.

Remember the Ancestors-also a time when
you remember the times with the people that have
passed on.

Pepe rama- these are paper lantern that are flown in
the sky. These lanterns are flown in the air for the
ancestors that have passed.

The fish of Maui

A long time ago Maui's brothers were going fishing  and didn't want Maui to come, Maui overheard and hid in the waka (canoe) before the  t brothers go. The brothers went thinking that maui was left behind  in the middle of the middle of the sea Maui spranged out of his hiding place , and gave brothers a fright with furi. Maui insisted to keep paddling so they listened to his demands.Maui paddled all night and one by one they fell asleep. Far away from home and Maui finally set his place to fish. The brothers did not give him bait so he used his blood from his nose and braced. Maui swung the rope and threw his hook. His hook got caught on a big fish. It was to strong so he chanted a karakia to the bottom of the sea. The big fish wanted to stay underwater ao the water heaved and shook like a tsunami and that was the new land.
